Why the Best Temperature Changes With the Goal

My practical rule is to keep the plunge several hours away from the lift when muscle growth is the main target.

2. Cooling down after heat stress

This is the one setting where very cold water earns its reputation. For exercise-induced hyperthermia, the literature strongly favors colder water and full-body immersion over partial cooling. Coaching judgment call: if an athlete is genuinely overheated from environment plus workload, I care more about rapid cooling than comfort. If the athlete just finished a normal session in mild weather, I go back to the moderate range.

3. Mental toughness and cold adaptation

If you are using the plunge to train composure under stress, 46 to 54 F (8 to 12 C) for 2 to 5 minutes is usually enough.
